By Miles and Bobby
The creators of this project are Miles Roberts and Bobby Rizzo. As an overview, Chicago is a city known for its high crime rates and dangerous neighborhoods. By utilizing https://data.cityofchicago.org Bobby and Miles were able to pinpoint crime in different areas and analyze other aspects of the city with regard to their effect on crime. These aspects include affordable housing, covid-19 statistics and education.
By pulling data from April 2022, we were able to create an interactive map of the city of Chicago with differing crimes and their exact coordinates. Feel free to interact with the map by zooming in and out, toggling with your mouse to view from a 3-Dimensional perspective and double clicking on specific crimes to look at them alone!
Looking specifically at April 23rd and 24th, we were able to create an hourly filter that displays different crimes that occured by the hour. Feel free to click the play button and interact with different crimes to see the increase in different crimes as the hourly difference shifts from night to day!
By extracting information from Chicago’s 2011 Summer Reading Programs for Children, Bobby and I were able to graph the coordinates of each location and vary the size of the point by the number of children participating in said programs. Look closely at the subtle variances in the bubble size in areas that have high concentrations of crime compared to areas with low crime (Large bubbles mean more children participating).
When analyzing statistics from 2020 about Covid-19 Hospitalizations, Bobby and Miles were surprised to find that crime had little to no effect on the number of people hospitalized. According to chicago.suntimes.com, a large demographic of people that are contributing to crime in Chicago are people of color. As seen in the graph, the total number of black hospitalizations almost constantly exceeded white hospitalizations.
Lastly, Miles and Bobby looked at affordable renting housing developments and their relationship to safe and dangerous neighborhoods. As seen on the right, the dangerous neighborhoods have a significantly lower average number of affordable rental houses.
On the other hand, when compared to the safest neighborhoods in Chicago, you can see that the number of affordable rental houses is significantly higher. We believe that this is attributed to the safety aspect of the different neighborhoods.
