Legacy |
-2nd consecutive year for a freshman class that is 8% Asian American (168 students), largest to date
-for the first time in at least 3 years, the president emeritus chose to exercise his constitutional privilege as advisor and honorary board member of AAA, attending meetings regularly and participating in voting
-11th annual Asian Allure raises the bar for years to come (see below for more details)
-Vienna Teng comes to Legends for the 2nd time (1st time had pitiful attendance of 10 people in 2003-2004 school year). Vince Niou makes arrangements with ND Student Union Board so that SUB pays for advertising and Vienna's performance fee, and AAA just has to pay miscellaneous expenses (housing, food, transportation)
-after its innaugural year, monthly multilingual rosary is put on hold as a priority due to lack of demand/interest
-3rd year for weekly grotto trips, but attendance declines sharply
-AAA succeeds in attracting record numbers of non-Asian students with the events Beach Bash, Vienna Teng concert, Thanksgiving dinner, and Imperial Ball
-community members, who organized team football practices in the fall twice weekly, requested funding from AAA for transportation to the "Rice Bowl" on Saturday, November 19 (the morning after final night of Asian Allure unfortunately). Male and female teams were fielded. The girls lost both of their games. And the boys lost their first game and forfeited their second due to the intimidating size of their second opponent and injuries sustained in game 1.
-Comedian Eliot Chang (2nd visit to campus in 7 years), the opening event of InFocus Conference 2007, succeeds in attracting a racially diverse group of 200 students to Carey Auditorium in the Hesburgh Library. |
Other Activities |
-"Beach Bash" picnic at beginning of year, but this year CCS, FASO, KSA, and Hawaii Club also provide food. Attracts 120 people to McGlinn Courts.
-Freshmen Retreat @ Sacred Heart Parish Center
-fall 2006 is 5th consecutive semester for "Assassins" game, but then discontinued
-fall 2006 is 3rd consecutive semester for "Pajama-rama" party, but then discontinued in the spring
-concession stand for UCLA game located at the NW corner of Fitzpatrick
-Asian Allure: Illumination at Washington Hall was produced by Paul Nguyen '07 & Covington Doan '07
-2nd annual free Thanksgiving dinner (15 cooks using 4 kitchens fed 80 people)
-2nd annual "It's a Triple-A Holiday" party, Vince dresses up as Santa Claus
-3rd annual winter retreat (@ Five Pines Retreat Center in Berrien, MI) and first time for winter retreat to have a theme ("Odyssey")
-2nd "Imperial Ball" semi-formal dance; becomes "Imperial Ball: A White Day Celebration" after partnering with KSA. White Day is a holiday similar to Valentine's Day in South Korea and Japan.
-InFocus: Mosaic focuses on Asian Americans in pop culture
-2nd "Asian Battlegrounds" at bookstore basketball courts; succeeds in attracting 16 teams, among whom there were 4 seeded bookstore teams, 3 ad-hoc teams of spring vis prospects, and 1 team of alumni
-2nd annual "End of the Year Banquet," held in Lafun Ballroom, attended by 50 members |

Location |
Washington Hall |
Legacy |
-Washington Hall is no longer thought of as an undesirable venue for Asian Allure. The convenience of the location, the facilities, and the theatre staff are valuable resources that the executive board was finally able to make the most of this year.
-is expanded to two nights to allow for maximum exposure (two opportunities for students to attend instead of only one) and to prolong the celebration of the hard work of the performers
-most sophisticated set design to date, with moveable set pieces on wheels that depict scenes of city life, traditional architecture, and natural landscapes
-traditional "MC" concept dumped in favor of a humorous storyline that follows two characters (Thao Le-Nguyen '07 and Zach Eberbach '08) as they travel around the U.S. and Asia
-aggressive marketing campaign that included two teaser posters that came out months before the final poster and also included handing out 1000 customized fortune cookies outside of Debartolo with sayings like "Life is suffering. Happiness is Asian Allure. Tickets on sale now at Lafun Box Office."
-traditional "audition" process is scrapped in favor of the executive board coordinating the number and length of performances with other student clubs ahead of time, and then having people sign up for these already-established opportunities. This succeeded in recruiting a record number of non-Asian participants, who no longer needed to have connections to the "in-groups" or a particular cultural club to participate in the show.
-modeling is majorly reduced to only 3 lines. models are no longer required to perform complicated dance moves (no hip-hop moves; only a short waltz in one of the lines)
|
Highlights |
-"Matrix Team" returns for a 2nd year with an original tribute to the video game "Mortal Kombat"
-"Cafe Scene" featuring Simon Chun '10 playing guitar and singing John Lennon's "Imagine" against a backdrop slideshow of 20th and 21st century military conflicts in Asia. Also featuring original song written, sung, and performed on piano by David Lee '09.
