NSF Summer REU

Program Director: Xuemin (Sheryl) Lu

Dr. Lu is an associate professor of the practice in the department of the Biological Sciences. She is also the director of undergraduate research for the College of Science, managing the summer research programs for the college. She teaches several courses like cell biology and pharmacology. Her research interests are molecular mechanisms of cancer and personalized medicine. She received her Ph.D. from Princeton University and worked in a clinical diagnostic company before coming to Notre Dame. She is dedicated to supporting undergraduate research.

Program Co-Director: Michelle Whaley

Dr. Whaley has coordinated the biology summer research program for over 15 years. Her research is in mosquito vision as it relates to vector control, and she teaches cell biology, genetics, and honors research courses. She is originally from Hawaii, went to Scripps College in Southern California, and received her Ph.D. from Notre Dame. She is very committed to undergraduate students and will provide a rigorous but supportive summer research program for all REU fellows.
