The week of April 3, we will be discussing Goodman's "new riddle of induction." You should read the Goodman selection in the coursepack. On Wednesday, we will also begin discussing the lottery paradox. Read section 1.1 of the selection from Hawthorne. On Monday, April 10, our final class day, we will continue our discussion of the lottery paradox, and also discuss the surprise exam paradox. For the latter, no reading is required; though you can check out the selection from Ned Hall in the course pack if you are interested.

The 5-page paper will be due in conferences on Friday, March 31. For more information about the paper, click here.

The fina exam will be April 12, at 9:00 am in Leacock 132. It will be of the same format as the midterm, and will cover the material we have discussed in class since the midterm (i.e., since our discussion of Hume's views about miracles). The final exam, like the midterm exam, will consist of three quotations from readings we have discussed so far. For each quotation, you will have to do three things: (1) name the author of the quote; (2) explain, clearly and in your own words, the argument of which the quote is a part; and (3) state and briefly evaluate at least one objection to that argument. The objection may be one discussed in class or one that you've come up with on your own. Please note that the handout covering Pascal's Wager was added in response to student interest; because we did not discuss it in class, it will not be on the final examination.

The final meeting of conferences will be on Friday, April 7.

The first paper was due on Friday, January 27 in conferences. For details click here.
