1794 Franklin Press Token
Obverse: SIC ORITUR DOCTRINA SURGETQUE LIBERTAS . 1794
Reverse: PAYABLE / AT / THE FRANKLIN / PRESS / LONDON
Weight: 116.9 g (7.58 grams) Diameter: 28.6 mm
Comments: Listed in Dalton and Hamer as Middlesex, Halfpenny section, no. 307a (plain edge). This appears to be an early example, minted before the die break within the press area occurred. The die breaks at the foot of the E and the R in LIBERTAS are clearly visible. Breen states that border denticles are usually incomplete on this token and in this example they are missing from 4:00 - 8:00 o'clock. On the reverse there is a small die break just to the right of the R in FRANKLIN. Also, a depression has been put in the center of this specimen.
Provenance: From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.
