Comments: This coin is know as the "New Haven Restrike," was struck from dies that were probably produced at the Scovill Mint in Waterbury, Connecticut. The term "New Haven Restrike" was based on the mistaken belief that these coins were produced by C. Wyllys Betts in New Haven from original dies he had discovered. Actually, there are several differences between this coin in the original Fugio series. Among the easist to spot is that the G in FUGIO is not a C with a straight line and cross added to make a G but rather is a peculiar form of the letter with a cross stroke that only extends outward. Also note that there are no ornaments between the words in MIND YOUR BUSINESS. Additionally, the date numerals are not the same, the first 7 has a club shapped down stroke and the second 7 is long and thin (it also has a broken end due to a die break). On the reverse the 13 linked rings are thinner on this coin when compared to the rings on an original Fugio. Clearly, these and other differences demonstrate a new imitation die was cut and used in the production of these coins rather than a later stamping using an original die.
