1787 Crosby 1-B Nova Eborac Copper - Figure left
Obverse: [quatrefoil] NOVA [quatrefoil]
EBORAC [quatrefoil]
Reverse: [quatrefoil] VIRT . ET LIB [quatrefoil]
1787
Weight: 130.7 g (8.47 grams) Diameter: 28.2 mm Reverse die alignment: 180°
Comments: This is a late state of the dies. The obverse is determined to be die 1 based on the legend. This is the only variety with quatrefoils before and after NOVA. The reverse die is distinguished as die B since it faces left. It is the only left facing variety with no stop after ET and no stop after LIB (Die D has a stop after ET, die C has a stop after LIB and die D faces right). The reverse die was cut rather shallow from 9:00 to 12:00 o'clock producing a very weak strike at the TR . ET in the legend as well as at the head of the figure. There are some planchet voids in that area. Also, the date deteriorated in the die so that late coins show almost no date, in this example only the first half of the date is visible. The obverse is discolored and shows virdigris.
Provenance: From the Robert H. Gore, Jr. Numismatic Collection.
