If you have spent any amount of time poking around the R help list or if you ever look at the R fortunes, you might have seen Frank Harrel's quote about scientists needing to be programmers. I feel that his assertion is nearly spot on and could even be expanded upon to note that you need to have more than a few programming languages within your toolbox. I do not feel it is fair to regulate them only to statistical programming, though, as you also need to develop skills for general web programming.
