Total Number of Threatened Species by Country - 2021

While the total number of threatened species being tracked over time cannot show meaningful trends, looking at a singular year can reveal trends among the countries. This visualiation shows the total number of threatened species by country, as assessed by the IUCN in 2021.

Once again, it can be seen that the countries with the highest number of threatened species are mainly concentrated around the equator. Additionally, the United States and China have some of the highest numbers of threatened species, and they also have some of the highest greenhouse gas emissions.

Madagascar has the most threatened species, with a total of 3717 as of 2021. Brazil, where a vast majority of the Amazon Rainforest is, also has a high number of threatened species with 2040. This is concerning, as these two countries are widely known for their high biodiversity.
