For the countries for which data was avaialble, the hectares of forest lost has greatly decreased over time, especially in countries with rainforest biomes, including Brazil, Mexico, and Central Africa. The data is averaged over five year periods as the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s Forest Resources Assessment has found that year to year changes in forest cover can be volatile.
Loss of forest coverage means a loss of habitat for a multitude of animals. This data supports the increase in threatened species in these countries.
