Courses
The high speed circuits and devices program at Notre Dame includes several courses and an instructional laboratory. The instructional laboratory (Microwave Circuit Design and Measurements Laboratory) not only supports the Microwave Circuit Design course, but also serves senior design projects as well as independent study and research.
Courses:
- Microwave Circuit Design and Measurements (EE 40458/EE 60558):
- Introduction to microwave circuit design and analysis techniques, emphasizing applications for modern microwave communication and sensing systems
- Integrated laboratory (all course meetings take place in the lab); course meetings are a mix of demonstrations, lecture, discussion, design, analysis and lab experiments
- Hands-on experience with microwave-frequency measurement techniques for device and circuit characterization
- Students will develop an enhanced understanding of circuit design and analysis principles as applied to modern microwave circuits, as well as gain familiarity with design techniques for both hand analysis and computer-aided design
- Electronics I
- Introduction and review; properties of amplifiers, input and output loading; operational amplifiers and related circuits: inverting, non-inverting amplifier configurations; summing and difference amplifiers; voltage comparators
- Solid-state diodes and analysis of diode circuits; applications of diodes: rectification, waveshaping, and voltage regulation
- Bipolar junction transistors (BJTs); physical operation of BJT, biasing regimes, and circuit models; single-stage amplifiers; quiescent and small-signal analysis; large-signal and logic applications
- Field-effect transistors (MOSFETs): physics of operation, operational modes (enhancement, depletion), types (n-, p-channel), biasing regimes, and circuit models; amplifier circuits and analysis
- Logic inverters and other logic gates; CMOS switches for digital and analog applications
- Integrated Optoelectronics (EE 60598)
- Graduate-level treatment of integrated optoelectronic devices
- Waveguides, couplers, detectors, lasers, and modulators
