The Tesoro della Lingua Italiana delle Origini (TLIO) Project: A Historical Dictionary of the Italian Language before 1375
In the summer of 2008, as part of their association with the Opera del vocabolario italiano (OVI), a branch of the famous Accademia della crusca (founded in 1583), the Devers Program in Dante Studies and the Nanovic Institute for European Studies sponsored an instructional program in Italian philology and lexicography. From June 17th through August 12th of 2008, six members of the Notre Dame community conducted research on early Italian texts and wrote entries for the Tesoro della Lingua Italiana delle Origini (TLIO), a historical dictionary of the Italian language before 1375. Pre-College Summer Experience - Dante's Inferno: In this intensive two-week course of study, students read the Inferno in both a scholarly translation by Robert and Jean Hollander, and a brilliant poetic rendering by contemporary Irish poet Ciaran Carson. There is a special focus on the poem's major episodes in the light of recent debates in the humanities. The seminar includes an up-to-date overview of Dante's life and works and introduces participants to the rare books and illustrated volumes of the University's spectacular John A Zahm, C.S.C. Dante Collection in the University Library. [More about the Summer Experience] Courses: The Devers Program supports the teaching of Dante at Notre Dame across the curriculum, in particular through its co-sponsorship of regular visiting professorships and its support of courses offered in: the Department of Romance Languages, the Program of Liberal Studies, the Ph.D. in Literature, the Department of English, the Department of Theology, and the Medieval Institute.

Class Visits and Group Tours: With its many early and illustrated editions of the Divine Comedy and Dante's other works, translations, and ephemera, the John A. Zahm, C.S.C. Dante Collection at the University of Notre Dame presents many possibilities for exploring Dante's reception through the centuries at first hand.
Tracy Bergstrom, Special Collections Librarian, regularly offers lecture presentations featuring selected items from the collection to Notre Dame students and visiting groups. Her presentations may be tailored to suit course needs and interests.

Teachers As Scholars (TAS): The TEACHERS as SCHOLARS program at the University of Notre Dame is a professional development program for K-12 teachers in collaboration with the South Bend Community School Corporation, the Catholic Schools Office of the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend Schools, Union-North United School Corporation, Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation, and the School City of Mishawaka.
TAS offers content-based seminars led by university faculty which provide teachers the opportunity to discuss scholarly issues when they are most likely to benefit — during the school day (9:00 AM - 3:30 PM). The Notre Dame TAS program offers five seminars each semester in the humanities and social sciences. Teachers are encouraged to take seminars which interest them regardless of their grade level or content expertise.
