Bernhard to Lead Office of Research

In August 2007, Robert J. Bernhard joined the University, filling the newly created position of vice president for research in charge of the University’s Office of Research. He also serves as a professor in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. According to Provost Thomas G. Burish, Bernard brings his gifts as researcher and teacher, not to mention those of a skilled administrator and facilitator of large-scale research programs, to Notre Dame. “He has the background, commitment, talent, integrity, and work ethic to help propel Notre Dame’s research efforts,” Burish said.

One of the leading experts on noise control, Bernhard previously served as the associate vice president for research and professor of mechanical engineering at Purdue University. “I’ve been at Purdue for 25 years and had a wonderful career there,” says Bernhard. “It was difficult to leave.” At the same time, he has expressed his excitement for the bold vision of the University as it takes its commitment to research to the next level.
