Merz Named AAAS Fellow

James L. Merz, the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Electrical Engineering, has been named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). A 1959 graduate of the University, he was cited for “distinguished contributions to the field of photonic devices and particularly to optical spectroscopy of semiconductor nanostructures.” An internationally recognized scholar in the field of optoelectronic materials and devices, Merz returned to Notre Dame in 1994 to direct a team of researchers investigating Quantum-dot Cellular Automata, a transistorless technology also known as “Notre Dame logic.” Since that time, he has served the University in various capacities, including vice president for graduate studies and research and, most recently, as interim dean of the College of Engineering.
