Overview

The Tenth Biennial History of Astronomy Workshop took place on July 6-10, 2011, at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, including a one-day trip to the Adler Planetarium in Chicago.

The theme of this year's workshop was the philosophy of astronomy. Potential topics included but were not limited to the role of philosophical and metaphysical claims in astronomy, issues of taxonomy and discovery, the role of observation and instruments, and the role of professional practice on the science of astronomy. Proposals in any area of the history of astronomy were considered, but papers and sessions germane to this theme will receive priority.

This year’s invited speaker was Liba Taub, director and curator of the Whipple Museum of the History of Science and professor in history and philosophy of science at the University of Cambridge.
