“Online Digital Education and
Transformed Faculty Roles”
The 2013 Annual Conference of the Global Engineering Deans Council will be held in Chicago, Illinois, USA on October 20 (Sunday) through October 22 (Tuesday). This year’s Conference is focusing on the use of technology in the enhancement of engineering education and, specifically, on evidence-based practices in making engineering education more effective and efficient. Among the keynote speakers planned for the Conference are C. D. Mote, Jr., Seeram Ramakrishna, Tae-Eog Lee, and John J. Tracy. Mote is the former long-serving President and Glenn L. Martin Institute Professor of the University of Maryland and the incoming President of the National Academy of Engineering. Mote is well known for his work on closing the achievement gap among diverse engineering students, and for his work and thoughts on educational funding models. Ramakrishna is Director of the Center for Nanofibers & Nanotechnology, National University of Singapore. He served as the Dean of Engineering from 2003-2008. He is the author of "The Changing Face of Innovation: Is it Shifting to Asia!" He is a Faculty Associate of the Global Asia Institute, and lectures on global trends of higher education, research and innovation. Lee is the Dean of Education for the 3.0 Initiative at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He serves as the chairman for the creative education subcommittee for KAIST. At KAIST he has also served as Director of Library and Information Systems and Founding Director of the National Digital Science Library. Tracy is Chief Technology Officer of The Boeing Company and Senior Vice President of Engineering, Operations & Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, as well as a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, the Royal Aeronautical Society and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has authored more than 30 publications in the areas of composite structural mechanics, launch vehicle structures, smart structures, and aging aircraft.
Chicago, and its downtown area known as The Loop, is one of the best examples of creative architecture and civil infrastructure. The Conference will be held in the Palmer House Hilton Hotel on Monroe street close to Michigan Avenue. The Palmer House is the United States’ oldest hotel in continual operation and one of the world’s last remaining “Grand Hotels.” The building was a wedding gift of business magnate Potter Palmer to his wife Bertha and was built immediately after the great Chicago Fire in 1871, opening in 1873. Presidents of the US, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde, Buffalo Bill and Prince Charles have all stayed at the Palmer House. Most of our events will occur in this classic hotel.
The Monday evening dinner will recognize the first recipient of the Airbus GEDC Diversity Award and will take place in the Art Institute of Chicago, another classic Chicago building. One of the finest art collections in the world, including substantial impressionist and renaissance art wings, as well as very significant collections of Asian and African art, the Art Institute is a classic Beaux-Arts building built for the World Congress in 1893.
