Mueller Elected AIAA Fellow
Thomas J. Mueller, the Roth-Gibson Professor of Aerospace
Engineering, has been named a Fellow in Aerospace Sciences by the American
Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).
A member of the Notre Dame faculty since 1965, Mueller is a leading researcher
in the complex flow phenomena present at low Reynolds numbers and is well
known by the aeroacoustics community as an exceptional experimentalist who
has made significant contributions to his field.
He has received numerous awards over the years. Most recently, he was named
a Fellow in the Royal Aeronautical Society of London, the first member of
the University faculty to receive this honor, and was the recipient of the
2003 AIAA Aerodynamics Award.
The author and co-author of several books and numerous journal articles,
Mueller also served as director of engineering research and graduate studies
from 1985 to 1989 and as chair of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical
Engineering from 1988 to 1996.
Mueller is the fourth member of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical
Engineering to receive this honor: Viola D. Hank Professor Hafiz
M. Atassi,
Professor Robert C. Nelson and Professor Eric
J. Jumper also hold the title
of AIAA Fellow.
The AIAA is the world’s largest professional technical society, and
the principal voice and resource, devoted to aeronautics and astronautics
information.
