Anthony Receives Shaheen Award
Jennifer Anthony, a doctoral
candidate in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, has
been named a winner of the
2004 Eli J. and Helen Shaheen Graduate School Award. Given in honor of Notre
Dame alumnus Eli J. Shaheen and his wife, the award recognizes the top doctoral
recipients in engineering, science, social sciences, and the humanities.
Nominated by their departments, Shaheen Award winners are chosen for their
superior performance in the Graduate School as exhibited by their grades,
the quality of their research, and the nature of their publications, as well
as the fellowships and other awards they have received during their course
of study at the University. The Shaheen Award also honors recipients for
their teaching ability as graduate assistants.
Anthony’s research focused on trying to better understand the molecular
thermodynamics of ionic liquid solutions. Ionic liquids are organic salts
with very low melting points. Because they do not evaporate, they cannot
cause air pollution. Much of Anthony’s time at Notre Dame was spent
trying to determine whether ionic liquids could be used as environmentally
benign solvents, specifically dissolving gaseous species. Her work formed
the basis of a patent awarded to the University. Currently, she holds a postdoctoral
position at the California Institute of Technology.
