Bowyer Receives Award of Excellence Kevin W. Bowyer, the Schubmehl-Prein Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, was presented with the 2005 Award of Excellence by the Society for Technical Communication, Philadelphia chapter, for an article published in the spring 2004 issue of IEEE Technology and Society Magazine. The award, given annually, recognizes excellence in technical communication. The article, titled “Face Recognition Technology: Security versus Privacy,” discusses the social controversy surrounding the field of biometrics in the wake of September 11, specifically face recognition technology. Bowyer’s research interests are in the areas of computer vision and pattern recognition, with a special emphasis on biometrics — face recognition, iris recognition, and ear shapes — and data mining.
