Sain Receives Meritorious Service Award
On November 7, 2005, at the International Conference
on Computer Aided Design, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics
Engineers (IEEE) presented Michael K. Sain, the Frank
M. Freimann Professor of Electrical Engineering, with the IEEE Circuits
and Systems Society’s Meritorious Service Award. The award was
given in recognition of four years of executive service in two vice presidencies,
14 years of service as editor of two of the society’s publications,
and a variety of IEEE committee activity performed by Sain over the years.
A faculty member since 1965, Sain’s interests are in controls and
in circuits and systems, where he is author or co-author of some 350
publications. He has pioneered or co-pioneered research in the areas
of inverse dynamical systems, zeros of multivariable systems, and the
use of cost cumulants and tensors in optimizations. Sain’s application
work includes jet engines, criminal justice systems, and minimizing the
damage to structures from earthquakes. Currently, he focuses on the use
of engineering analogies to study questions in theology and moral ethics.
A fellow of the IEEE, Sain is a member of the Society for Industrial
and Applied Mathematics; Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society; and
Eta Kappa Nu, the electrical and computer engineering honor society. He
is also a recipient of the IEEE Centennial Medal.
