Introduction to Engineering Program Hosts Mississippi Scholarship Students

Every summer the University of Notre Dame holds the Introduction to Engineering Program (IEP) for high school students interested in the field of engineering. The program introduces the students to the different fields of engineering in their three-week stay on campus. This past summer, Notre Dame, with a generous grant from Northrop Grumman Ship Systems, was able to sponsor seven high school students from Mississippi. Northrop Grumann paid for the students’ tuition while the University, through the Martell grant, was able to cover travel costs.

The Mississippi students who attended were Liza Abney, Charles Clancy, Stephen Dix, Henry Francis, Sanzetta Frazier, Brittany Jones, and Charles Molden. They attend Harrison Central and Moss Point high schools.

IEP is an annual program that brings talented high school students to the University of Notre Dame to study various topics in engineering. The students are exposed to all the departments within the College of Engineering. They have the opportunity to meet faculty members and to use Notre Dame’s state-of-the-art facilities. IEP consists of daily lectures, hands-on design projects, computer programming sessions, and field trips to local engineering manufacturing facilities.  Ramzi Bualuan, director of undergraduate studies in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, leads the program.

The IEP program, which has been in existence for more than 25 years, brings 110 students to campus every summer. Many of these students later apply to the University. In addition to the seven Mississippi scholarship winners, many other students also received financial assistance to attend this program.
