Nobel Laureate Presented Inaugural Merz Lecture

On September 9, 2004, Herbert Kroemer, the recipient of the 2000 Nobel Prize in Physics presented the inaugural lecture of the James and Rose-Marie Merz Lecture Series.

Kroemer, whose talk was titled “Negative Optical Refraction: What is the Fuss all about?,” received the Nobel Prize for “developing semiconductor heterostructures used in high-speed and opto-electronics.”

The Merz Lecture Series was established and endowed by the University’s Graduate and Research Advisory Council in October 2001 in recognition of the outstanding contributions made to the University by James L. Merz, vice president for graduate studies and research from 1996 to 2001.

Merz, who stepped down as vice president in June 2001, is the Frank M. Freimann Professor of Electrical Engineering and concurrent professor of physics.
