Lucey and Mueller Named Emeritus

Two faculty members in the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering are have been promoted to emeritus. In August 2004 John W. Lucey was promoted to associate professor emeritus. He joined the University in 1965, teaching many of the College of Engineering’s courses in nuclear energy. Instrumental in developing the Summer Engineering Program in London, one of the first foreign study experiences available to Notre Dame engineering students, Lucey served as the director of program for many years. His research has spanned nuclear engineering, numerical methods, radiation shielding, energy conservation, and educational technology.

Thomas J. Mueller, the Roth-Gibson Professor of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, also joined the faculty in 1965. He will become emeritus at the end of this current academic year. During his tenure at the University, Mueller served as director of engineering research and graduate studies and as chair of the Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. Most recently, he was named a fellow in aerospace sciences by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. He was also named a fellow in the Royal Aeronautic Society of London, the first member of the University faculty to receive this honor.
