Alumni Association Honors Richter
for Distinguished Service
Daniel J. Richter, a senior in the
Department of Civil Engineering and Geological Sciences, was one of the
recipients of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Association’s 2004-05
Distinguished Student Award. A resident of Los Gatos, Calif., Richter holds
a 3.86 grade point average and was nominated by the University for the
Rhodes and Marshall Scholarship competitions. He is studying the thermodynamics
of uranium mineral dissolution under the direction of Professor Jeremy B. Fein, director
of the Environmental Molecular Sciences Institute at Notre Dame.
The award is given as much for in-class performance
as it is for his overall service to the local and global communities. Richter
has served as co-chair of the Appalachia Task Force and is a staff member
of the Notre Dame Encounter with Christ Retreat. He has participated in
the Urban Plunge service project. He has also served local organizations,
including the Logan Center and St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.
Richter also received the Raymond C. Gutschick Award, the Rev. Alexander
Kirsch, C.S.C., Award from his department, and was named a 2005 Steiner honoree
by the College of Engineering. The Gutschick Award is presented to a graduating
senior who has demonstrated the most promise in geological research as evidenced
by a successful undergraduate research project. The Kirsch Award is presented
to a senior in geological sciences who has evidenced high qualities of personal
character, scholarship, and leadership. Steiner honorees are selected for
their academic achievements, dedication to their fields of study, outstanding
leadership abilities, and commitment to the values of the University.
